If you’re lucky you may even catch a glimpse of the northern lights and witness a spectacular Aurora Borealis show.

A must-visit eatery known for its homemade pies and hearty breakfasts, JJ’s Steak and Pizza. There is a full-size alligator above the bar as well as bears, and other animals all throughout. 

For a classic Polish dining experience, head to The Old Polish Corner with delicious pierogies and polish classics. 

A popular go-to spot for craft beer fans is Red Brick Tap & Barrel. featuring locally brewed selections alongside delicious gourmet comfort food.

Alpena is home to other unique attractions that showcase its history and natural wonders. A trip to downtown Alpena wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center and the Besser Museum Of the Northeast. 

Explore the fascinating world of the region’s rich maritime heritage at Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center. This interactive museum features exhibits on shipwrecks, historic navigation, and underwater archaeology. There is no cost for admission, and it is open year-round.

Experience the thrill of a Lake Huron storm simulation as you walk the deck of a full-sized replica of a Great Lakes schooner at the museum. For an up-close look at the many shipwrecks that lie beneath Thunder Bay, embark on a Glass-bottom Boat Tour. Tours depart daily May through October, tickets can also be purchased at Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center. 

Explore the Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan, with art, and science exhibits, a planetarium and a recreated 19th-century village.


Attend Annual Alpena Ice Festival

One-day winter fun festival at the annual Alpena Ice Festival in February. The event begins at Mich-e-kewis Park on the beautiful shores of Lake Huron.
